The Mulberry Tree Growth Rate

The mulberry tree family contains several species of trees and cultivars, all of which are known for their fast growth rate. Few problems affect the trees and even those that do rarely slow the tree's growth

Conditions

  • Mulberry trees grow the fastest when they are planted in full sun, but they can tolerate partial shade. The trees also prefer moist or dry soil that drains well. They can only tolerate wet soils for short lengths of time.

Diseases and Pests

  • Few diseases or pests bother mulberry trees enough to slow their growth rate. Popcorn disease can cause the fruits to swell up, but it does not bother the tree itself. Gathering and burning the swollen fruits helps control the problem.
  • Young mulberry trees benefit from pruning that helps them developed a strong, structured framework. Once the tree gets established, it requires little pruning except for dead limbs. Pruning should be done when the tree is dormant and not growing.

Watering

  • Mulberry trees are considered to be somewhat drought-resistant. But if their roots dry out during times of drought, the tree may drop its fruit before it ripens. To keep the tree's rapid growth rate going steady, the tree benefits from watering when dry conditions prevail.
